Training in First Aid and Flares

Today two of our consultant Doctors, Lyle and Daryl, delivered an excellent First Aid training session.

Crew trained on our new portable Laerdal Compact Suction Unit, which considerably enhances our crew’s capability in a drowning situation. We have also added Prometheus Pelvic Splints to our trauma kit so the crew practiced the use of these in a variety of scenarios.

Many thanks to Lyle and Daryl for giving up precious spare time and we look forward to our next session…..

Last week we had conducted training on pyrotechnics as we are required to carry flares under maritime law and it is therefore essential to know how to use them effectively in an emergency situation. It is a fairly well known fact that the Titanic fired eight white rockets into the sky starting around 12.45 am on April 15 1912 to attract nearby ships instead of using the red distress rockets. The nearby SS Californian observed these rockets but did not immediately recognise them as a distress signal, leading to crucial delays in rescue. The ship was equipped with 36 or more rockets many of which remained in their storage containers within the wreckage.

St Abbs Independent Lifeboat carries two tubes with 6 different types of flares inside for different situations. Each life jacket also has a day/night personal hand flare within the pocket.
